Director: Wojciech Jerzy Has Released in 1973, The Hour-Glass Sanatorium depicts the strange excursions of Józef, a man who takes a train journey to visit his dying father in a sanatorium. Upon arrival, Józef starts to experience some peculiar events; the hospital itself is dilapidated and no one seems to know whos in charge; time is behaving in strange and unpredictable ways, sending Józef randomly to the past without warning, altering and shifting uncontrollably. Perhaps the most bizarre of the events is that everyone inextricably treats Józef as though he were a child, part of the sense of timelessness that pervades the film; a sense that the sanatorium itself exists extraneously to any particular historical period, outside of time itself. One minute the protagonist is a grown up, and in the next moment hes re-experiencing his childhood as a young boy.
