10 Surrealist Films That Will Mess With Your Head

9.Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010)

Director: Apichatpong Weerasethakul Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives follows the story of Uncle Boonmee during the final few days of his existence. Haunted by the ghost of his dead wife and son, the latter of whom has returned in the form of a strange, monstrous creature, Boonmee relives experiences from his past lives as he makes his journey towards death. Ridiculously difficult to follow, the film€™s considered surrealist mainly because of the way it handles the divide between life and death. Everything from the disjointed editing to the irregular soundtrack help accentuate this divide, creating a truly eerie experience in the process. As Boonme nears the end of his journey, things get stranger and stranger, almost as if to reflect his transition from this life into the next.
