3. Madea's Witness Protection
Tyler Perry struck gold many years ago with his Madea character and subsequent franchise. Generally, Madea was the matriarchal character featured as comic relief in the background while a family melodrama ensues in the forefront. This time however, writer/producer/director/star Perry decided to go for nothing but belly laughs with this putrid attempt at comedy showcasing Madea as the main comic foil. It failed and failed miserably. Perry somehow even managed to drag the always brilliant Eugene Levey down to his depths, making for an uncomfortable comedic duo. Perry's films and the Madea franchise have a built in audience, and it was no surprise that this film, despite being lambasted by critical word of mouth, still managed to make 3 times the $20 million it cost to produce back at the box office. With the ageless Madea always a popular mainstay in Perry's films, we are certain this is not the last we have seen of her, and a sequel is more than expected in the future.
