These days, summer blockbusters are sold primarily on name recognition rather than anything else. As Michael Bay's Transformers series and the last two Pirates of the Caribbean movies have definitively proven, it doesn't really seem to matter if the final product is any good as long as its based on a massively popular brand with a huge built-in audience. Another shift in the marketing of big-budget studio movies is that they are also becoming less reliant on star power. In the past, a big name above the title would almost guarantee solid box office returns but with the increasing importance on franchise filmmaking, the movie star is becoming less important when it comes to commercial success. However, big-name brands like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Harry Potter and Peter Jackson's Middle Earth series have also shown that assembling a talented roster of actors can only benefit the franchise in the long run. On the other side of that coin, there have also been plenty of times when a big-budget blockbuster has boasted a hugely talented cast and the results have been less-than-stellar. With hundreds of millions of dollars being ploughed into these projects under the watchful eye of studio executives, sometimes even an impressive roll-call of actors fail to elevate the final product above mediocrity. With that in mind, this article will look at ten terrible blockbusters that each featured an impressive ensemble cast, what the movie's major problems were and just how the filmmakers managed to waste such a vast array of talent.
