10 Terrible CGI Moments in High-Budget Movies

8. The Matrix Reloaded - Burly Brawl (2003)

http://youtu.be/GSprkzio_pE Like just about any 15-year-old boy at the time, I couldn't wait to see The Matrix Reloaded; knowing that I was going to get to see another showdown between Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) left me in positive paroxysms of joy, and as the so-called "Burly Brawl" began to kick off, I figured I was in for something special. I didn't quite count on this, though; the term "stylised to death" might seem a bit inappropriate for a sequel to a film that featured one of the most iconic and copied visual effects shots in history, but The Wachowskis managed to do it here. A frequent critique you'll hear of the scene is that it too closely resembles a video game; the low-quality textures of Neo's jacket - which looks too smooth - and the overall blurriness of the countless Agent Smith clones make the scene scarcely coherent at the worst of times. Also, ropey animation and poor physics make it harder to swallow, while the CGI artists decided it was fine for Neo's pole to bend at several points during the fight. Sure, it's still a fun scene to watch, but it's more goofy than genuinely thrilling; it's hard to take the sense of threat seriously when it looks so thoroughly ridiculous.
