Yet further proof that filmmakers from the Americas find posh English stereotypes a lot funnier than they actually are - and perhaps the best evidence as to why Lee Evans never quite took off in Hollywood.

There's Something About Mary was a landmark comedy in many respects, establishing Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz as the go-to rom-com leads they remain 18 years later, and cementing the Farrellys as the masters of bad taste humour. However, it also sports a teeth-grittingly annoying supporting turn from British stand-up Evans as one of the many would-be suitors for Diaz's Mary.

The running joke is that all the men who fall under Mary's spell are driven to somewhat sinister subterfuge - and to this end, it is revealed that Evans' Tucker, initially presented as a jolly-well-English architect who walks with crutches, is in fact an able-bodied American pizza delivery man who created a persona which he hoped would make him more appealing to the big-hearted Mary.

Not only does he fail to win her over, he also fails to win over the audience, Evans's spectacularly unfunny scenes proving the only real let-downs in the otherwise hilarious movie.
