Director: David Petrarca

Rhode Island native David Petrarca worked as a director at Chicago's Goodman Theatre from 1998 until 2005, and from there forged a path into television. This well respected TV helmer has worked on a number of big shows, from Netflix's Jessica Jones and Marco Pollo to HBO's Boardwalk Empire, but most prominently episode's four and five of Game of Thrones Season 2.

Petrarca's one and only foray into feature film directing was a strange one for someone of his background and pedigree - Save The Last Dance 2: Stepping Up. Maybe he relished the challenge of bringing some credibility to the idea, but if he did he failed that challenge resoundingly, sending this awful sequel straight to video.

This is the story of a ballerina student that gets seduced away from her chosen discipline by a new tutor who preaches the raw honesty of hip-hop dance, pretty much imitating the steps of the first movie. Julia Stiles is replaced by Izabella Miko in the lead role of Sara, and the new actress makes little effort to mimic her predecessor, inexplicably giving the character a bunch of new traits.

It's a horribly edited mess with a number of random story threads that seem to either go nowhere or disappear entirely; a dancer named Candy displays unprovoked hostility toward Sara and is hardly seen again, Sara's teacher discovers she is taking pills to help with her performance and just forgets about it, her roommate harps on about a play that we never get to see. Petrarca's film amounts to little more than half-boiled sub-plots and generic dance scenes.
