10 Terrible Films You Won't Believe Won Oscars

2. The Wolfman

The Wolfman went through so many production delays that when it finally came out in February of 2010, there was hardly much excitement left. The movie stars Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, and Emily Blunt and they each look like they're phoning it in. Meanwhile, director Joe Johnston fails to find the right balance for this film and it ultimately feels way overcooked. The Wolfman is a remake of the 1941 classic of the same name, and it never allows itself to stand on its own. Instead of being a modern retelling of a classic story, it utilizes too many cheap horror tactics that keeps it from feeling original. There are no surprises, it's not terrifying, and it's simply a reminder that CGI can't replace great tension and suspense. They have to complement each other. Despite the film being a huge box office and critical disappointment, it still managed to collect an Oscar for Best Makeup. Rick Baker, the makeup artist for the film, picked up the seventh Oscar win of his career. His previous wins include American Werewolf in London, Harry and the Hendersons, Ed Wood, The Nutty Professor, Men In Black, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. He's very well respected in his field and actually has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Needless to say, his Oscar was probably well-deserved even if it means giving an Oscar to The Wolfman.
