Flashdance stars Jennifer Beals as Alex Owens, who works as a steel-mill welder by day and as exotic dancer by night and has dreams of becoming a ballet dancer. Beals stars alongside Michael Nouri, whose character owns the steel mill and happens to be a customer at the nightclub where Alex works. They eventually form a very unlikely and completely unconvincing relationship... and "unconvincing" pretty much describes this entire movie. All of the characters are one-dimensional and the story winds up looking like a bad '80s version of Cinderella. This movie is essentially a series of music videos. There's some great choreography and music, but as a story, it's a completely empty and mind-numbing affair. This movie came out during a time when everyone just wanted dance, dammit. There was Footloose, Dirty Dancing, and Flashdance. Flashdance is easily the worst of the bunch. Still, it's technically an Oscar-winning film. Flashdance won the Oscar for Best Original Song which makes sense considering the soundtrack was a huge hit at the time. Two songs from Flashdance were nominated: "Flashdance... What a Feeling" and "Maniac," and it's the first one that wound up taking the golden statue.
