10 Terrible Mars Movies That Don't Bode Well For The Martian

6. Ghosts Of Mars

Rotten Tomatoes score: 21%

Box Office: $14 million ($28 million budget)

Talking of the Martian undead, here's another attempt at the same concept. Ghosts Of Mars, in which the spirits of an ancient Martian civilisation possess the citizens of a terraformed Mars, is probably not as bad or unoriginal a film as The Last Days On Mars and is certainly better remembered, although that is perhaps the very definition of 'faint praise'.

The most notable thing about what is otherwise a pretty pointless attempt literally to transpose a bunch of horror tropes onto a different planet is that it is symptomatic of the decline of a former master.

Compared to the not dissimilar dystopian destruction and siege movie narrative of director John Carpenter's Escape From New York and Assault On Precinct 13, it's hard to believe that Ghosts Of Mars is the product of the same creative mind. Carpenter has only had one film in cinemas in the 14 years since.
