10 Terrible Moments From Awesome Movies

2. Lost In Translation - Racism or Comedy?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPQ6VQzuyxU On the whole, Sofia Coppola's comic drama is a sublimely written, directed and performed film about the inevitable culture shock that occurs when anyone ventures to a foreign country in which they do not speak the native language. However, the relative subtlety of the film - which cuts right through to its brilliantly minimalistic ending - is temporarily undone by a downright embarrassingly racist scene in which a woman is sent up to Bill Murray's room, only to get on the floor and ask him to "Lip my stockings, prease!". Like most men with a mental Asian woman in their room who only wants you to rip their stockings, he asks her to leave, at which point she sulks around on the floor, much to the dismay of Murray and many an audience member, one expects. Though the scene is clearly meant to be awkward, its is at odds with everything else the film has to offer; had it been anymore silly, it would be outright slapstick.
