10 Terrible Movie Moments The Directors Didn't Even Want
9. Alien Origins - Edge Of Tomorrow
This was not just another Tom Cruise action vehicle. A refreshing take on the Groundhog Day premise, its main focus is on Bill Cage, an initially clueless coward who takes on an invading alien army by dying over and over again. Not to mention the stand-out performance from Emily Blunt, topping fan wish lists for virtually every notable female action role for years to come.
The film is not flawless however, and screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie knows exactly which error is the most egregious. Again thinking film audiences needed everything explained to them, the studio pushed for McQuarrie to write in an attempt to identify the motivation behind the aliens invading the planet, despite him being firmly in the belief that the audience did not need this explaining.
In the end, the added scene was one where rather than meet up with Blunt's Rita Vrataski, Cage randomly decides to go to a pub instead. People inside start discussing the invaders' intentions, upon which Cage questions why that even matters now. Although McQuarrie got his point in (take that studio!), the scene is still needless and out of place, slowing the film down to a halt. You can definitely see where McQuarrie was coming from with this one.
