10 Terrible Movie Moments The Directors Didn't Even Want

8. Jump Scares - Mimic

The 1990s was a great time for the B-level monster film fanatic, with The Mummy, Tremors and The Relic all gracing the silver screen within the decade. Mimic continued that trend, and while not exactly being a tour de force in horror cinema, it is a decent thriller about mutated bugs lurking in Manhattan sewers. Yes, it had many generic horror tropes, but it still delivered some genuine thrills with original and remarkably creepy designs.

It's only when you realise that the man behind the film is Guillermo del Toro, one of the most talented directors working today, that you feel this should've been so much more. And when you start scratching beneath the surface, you realise that it was supposed to be so much less - literally.

With echoes of David Fincher's difficulties making Alien 3, del Toro's first experience working on a big studio production was not smooth to say the least. Not impressed with the more subtle and character-driven direction del Toro was taking Mimic in, they got second unit directors to film extra jump-scares to pepper in, which were unsurprisingly excised from the director's cut.

Because audiences would rather have something jump at them every five minutes than allow a director to build up any semblance of tension or suspense. The horror!
