10 Terrible Movie Moments The Directors Didn't Even Want

7. Venom - Spider-Man 3

The original Spider-Man series was so close to becoming one of the best superhero trilogies of all time before the MCU even started. Instead it fell at the final hurdle, leaving Spider-Man 3 to suffer the same fate as the likes of X-Men: The Last Stand and Blade: Trinity as a third instalment best described as bigger, but not better, than its predecessors.

As most spidey fans will tell you, the problem this film has is too many villains, with Sandman, Hobgoblin and Venom all antagonising the webhead within its runtime. As the film needs to split its focus on so many characters, it's no wonder their progression feels rushed, resulting in cringeworthy moments such as Peter's "emo" phase and a butler with the most conveniently timed memory recall in cinematic history.

A fan favourite for years prior, Sony was keen on the inclusion of Venom in Spider-Man 3, pushing director Sam Raimi to shoehorn him amongst story arcs like the Harry-Peter dynamic that had been spanning the entire series. This led Raimi, who recently stated that he didn't really believe in all the characters in the film, to focus on upping the stakes rather than on character moments, much to film's detriment and fans' disappointment.
