10 Terrible Movie Moments The Directors Didn't Even Want
2. Surprise Aliens - Indiana Jones & The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull
It was always going to be a tall order to create another Indiana Jones adventure that stacks up to the much beloved original trilogy, especially almost 20 years post-The Last Crusade. Safe to say The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull didn't come anywhere close to the quality of its predecessors for most fans.
While not the only misstep, the third act reveal where the titled MacGuffin belonged to aliens from another dimension was certainly one of them. It might have even been the final straw for fans willing to stay with the film through the fridge-nuking fiasco and CGI gophers. As the MacGuffins in previous entries centred on deities and legends instead, the side step dabbling into science-fiction did not mesh well with the fanbase.
Steven Spielberg never liked the aliens either, having many arguments about their involvement. So why did they stay in? Given his résumé, it's not like studios can really tell him what do.
Turns out that rather than it being a studio mandate, the alien reveal was an integral part in the original story outline by George Lucas, the storyteller of the entire Indy series thus far. So it was Spielberg's loyalty to Lucas' vision that kept the aliens in the picture.
