10 Terrible Movies By Great Directors

7. Blackhat - Michael Mann

The Counsellor
Universal Pictures

Michael Mann is well known for intense and interesting films like The Last of the Mohicans, Heat, and Collateral. He's worked with some of the best actors in the industry and has drawn out some remarkable performances from all of them.

Mann rarely drops the ball when it comes to building tension and crafting exhilarating action sequences, but that's exactly what happened with Blackhat. Moments of suspense either don't have enough time to build, or are left to sit for too long, causing them to fizzle out. The action scenes are poorly edited and choreographed, appearing unrecognizable from Mann's other work. Even the acting performances are lacklustre; Chris Hemsworth is entirely uncharismatic despite being a skilled actor.

Blackhat's script tries to come across smarter than it really is, and the dialogue is decidedly weak. A story about a hacker-turned-action hero tasked with bringing down cyberterrorists should be interesting, but it requires better execution than what Michael Mann produced.
