10 Terrible Movies Everybody Loves
4. Idle Hands
It’s true that not every filmmaker is necessarily shooting to win that Best Picture Oscar. Some just want to tell a story and have a good time doing it. Idle Hands is the kind of film that looks at its critical census, throws its head back, gives it the finger and carries on its merry way. It's 90's teenage rebellion, distilled.
Devon Sawa (who you would recognise from Final Destination, or Eminem’s Stan music video) plays Anton, a stoner who manages to go an entire week before realising his parents are dead. To make matters worse, he did it - or rather his hand did, as its been apparently possessed by the devil. What proceeds is a comedy goreforest as Anton fights off his comically evil digits.
Seth Green stars as one of Anton’s wacky stoner friends (both of which die and come back as zombies), Jessica Alba plays the proto-typical girl next door, pop punk icons The Offspring make a cameo appearance to perform live and the day is saved by a bong. It’s completely, utterly ludicrous and dripping with 90s horror-comedy cheese.
Currently sitting at a 15% on Rotten Tomatoes, Idle Hands was described by critics as tired and unfunny and to a certain extent they’re right - but there’s something charmingly bonkers, not to mention nostalgic, about it all the same.
