10 Terrible Movies Everyone Goes Way Too Easy On

3. The Fox And The Hound

Disney

Following the death of its namesake, Walt Disney Animation Studios went through a very dark time. From the mid-sixties through to the late-eighties (when The Little Mermaid bubbled onto the scene) the studio stumbled around trying to recapture its former glory with little success. This left us with a string of totally average movies and some uncharacteristic bombs. Imagine what the fifteen or so years pre-Tangled were like, only with fewer, lower quality films.

When pinpointing the lowest point of all for the studio, most fingers are aimed in The Black Cauldron's direction. A massive box office bomb that has been all but forgotten in the years since its 1985 release, it is certainly a low point for the studio financially, but creatively Disney had reached that point a few years previously with The Fox And The Hound. On paper it's the ideal Disney movie; there's a strong, relatable, emotional conflict built right into the central relationship. Yet in the film the obvious and heart-wrenching concept - friends torn apart by their very nature - is replaced with by-the-numbers relationship politics and an extreme reliance on the bond between fox and Old Lady (that old chestnut).

With no memorable songs and a unwillingness to do anything truly exciting with the characters it's incredibly neutered Disney. The Fox And The Hound is a boring trot through the motions that makes the daring Black Cauldron look epic in comparison. And yet thanks to the Disney name (and no small amount of fond childhood memories), it isn't regarded nowhere near as low as it should be.
