10 Terrible Movies That Got ONE Thing Right
6. Sucker Punch - The Fight Scenes
Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch hasn't aged all that well. Given the last few years, the rise of the Me Too movement, and the general awakening to the treatment of women in film, Sucker Punch's divisive portrayal of its female protagonists as both victim and warrior is somewhat troubling.
The short explanation - Babydoll is a young woman committed to a mental health facility, who copes with the traumas there by envisioning the place as a brothel, and her fellow prisoners and guardians as employees. Babydoll has to escape before she is lobotomised, leading to the many fight scenes as she and her fellow prisoners become fantasy-style heroes.
Regardless of your view of the film - which was a critical and box office failure - it's hard to not agree that the fantasy fight scenes, a Snyder specialty, are excellent. Slow motion, wire-work, huge enemies and weapons, aerial combat, jump cuts, a pounding soundtrack - they're all there.
Whether you are more into hand-to-hand / melee combat (the samurai battle is a standout here) or big set pieces (the World War 1 sequence), if you're a fan of film fights you'll find something here for you.
This could have been quite a movie if it had a different mindset.
