7. Credence's True Name - Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbeldore

Scream VI
Warner Bros. Pictures

In the final moments of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, the titular villain informs his ward, Credence Barebone, that he is Albus Dumbledore's long-lost brother, Aurelius. Although this exposition was meant to blow our minds, most people found it forced, pointless, and contradictory to the Harry Potter lore. (Also, a lot of Potterheads forgot about this plot point entirely by the time the sequel came out.)

But do you know what's worse than a pointless twist? A pointless twist... that contradicts another pointless twist! In the follow-up, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, we discover Aurelius is not Albus' bro after all. Rather, he's Aberforth's son, making him Albus' nephew.

Viewers found this retcon maddening, since it discarded the epilogue of the previous instalment. Why reveal Aurelius as Albus' sibling, only to rewrite their relationship in the very next movie? That would be like if Return of the Jedi ended with Darth Vader telling Luke Skywalker that he lied about being his dad.

Since all signs are pointing to the Fantastic Beasts franchise being cancelled in the near future, it appears this mishandled subplot will never get any real pay-off.
