10 Terrible Twists In Recent Movies That Pissed Us Off
8. Virtual Reality - Don't Worry Darling
It's a shame when the behind-the-scene antics of a movie gain more press than the movie in question. However, Don't Worry Darling only has itself to blame, since the chaotic marketing was far more entertaining than the finished product.
In Olivia Wilde's psychological thriller, a 1950s housewife called Alice (Florence Pugh) starts to suspect something is wrong with her paradise-like community.
After piecing everything together, Alice discovers her entire reality exists within a simulation. To add to her horror, she learns her husband placed her in this VR program against her will.
Firstly, this twist has been done to death. Black Mirror. The Matrix. The Truman Show. Serenity. Heck, The Twilight Zone did this shtick dozens of times, and that came out 60 years ago!
Not only is this shocker not so shocking, it's telegraphed countless times. At the 20 minute-mark, a shot of Alice in the simulation flickers on the screen, while Margaret is arguing with her husband. Although we only see this shot for a split-second, it appears long enough for eagle-eyed viewers to spot. Inserting a shot like this isn't subtle foreshadowing. It just spoils the movie.
