10 Terrible Twists In Recent Movies That Pissed Us Off

5. Andi Is Not Really Andi – Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Scream VI
Netflix

In Glass Onion, visionary detective, Benoit Blanc, is invited to the home of the billionaire, Miles Bron, along with various other guests, including his ex-wife, Andi. When a guest is murdered, it's up to Benoit to solve the case.

Because the previous instalment, Knives Out, was so masterful at catching viewers off-guard, many expected Glass Onion to follow a similar tact.

Instead, it delivers one of the laziest twists imaginable. Through a flashback, we get exposition dump that reveals Andi is not really Andi. Rather, she is Helen - the twin sister of Andi, who was murdered by Miles' associates. Out for revenge, Helen devises a scheme with Benoit to destroy Miles' empire, which involves her posing as her deceased sibling.

Although nobody saw this coming, that doesn't mean this twist is clever. The "x was y's sibling all along" trope has been a part of storytelling for millennia. The secret twin reveal is such a cliche, it's utilised more in spoofs than dramas, often to make fun of how preposterous and unoriginal it is. Because director/writer, Rian Johnson, hopes to turn Knives Out into a franchise, it's a pity he's already relying on derivative storytelling techniques like this.
