10 Terrific Scenes From Otherwise Terrible Comic Book Movies

2. The Warehouse Fight (Batman V Superman)

It might only be a year-old, but 2016's Batman v Superman has already managed to accumulate plenty of notoriety.

Based in-part on Frank Miller's iconic storyline, The Dark Knight Returns, Bats v Supes was made with the intent of kickstarting DC's fledgling cinematic universe. Batman and Superman sharing the big-screen together was meant to be the premier event that year, and while the film excels stylistically in some respects, its over-the-top aspects - specifically the fight shared between the two titular heroes - were immediately derided upon release. Images of Ben Affleck looking into the distance to the tune of Simon and Garfunkel became the film's defining moment.

And yet, the film does have some redeeming aspects. While controversial at the time, Ben Affleck's casting as the Dark Knight was widely considered to be one of the few promising aspects of the DCEU going forward. To do that in spite of the fact the film completely tore out Batman's founding tenets (y'know, the whole 'not-killing' thing) is pretty spectacular, and nowhere is this best exemplified than in its infamous warehouse fight scene.

With one Martha trapped by Lex Luthor's goons, Batman rushes to her rescue. Employing all the techniques of Miller and of Rocksteady's Arkham series, Bat-fleck systematically destroys each and every last crook in the most convincing action set-piece to have ever featured the character in a live-action scenario.

It might not be Nolan quality, but when it comes to action, Snyder has that element down to tee.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
