10 Terrific Scenes From Otherwise Terrible Comic Book Movies

4. Victor And Logan Fighting Through Time (X-Men Origins: Wolverine)

X-Men Origins: Wolverine, in truth, probably set Fox's X-Men movie plans back about half a decade. The film was meant to kick off a whole wave of Origins-style features that would've focussed on individual X-Men during their formative years, including Gambit, and yet nothing came of it because the first one was so terrible.

It did have a few things going for it though. Liev Schreiber's Sabretooth was a fine improvement over the first version of the character that we saw in Bryan Singer's films, and Hugh Jackman - then almost a decade into his tenure as Wolvie - was as good as ever. One of the best things about the film, however, comes really early into its running time, during the opening credits themselves.

Focusing on Victor and Logan as they fight their way through pretty much every western conflict since 1860 (as American soldiers, strangely enough), the sequence showed off just how big a journey Logan had to make before he got his adamantium skeleton, filling in a vital piece of history and providing the perfect introduction to the character's early days.

It's atmospheric, grand, and everything that the rest of the film pretty much wasn't. Condense that sequence into an entire film, and Origins Wolverine could've been the kick Fox really needed to do right by Marvel's Mutants, sans a sewn-up Ryan Reynolds.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
