10 Terrifying Animated Horror Movies
9. The Belladonna Of Sadness
This Japanese film from 1973 is not exactly an easy watch. Whilst featuring some truly breath-taking animation, the plot primarily focuses on sexual assault and so must be watched with caution.
Despite causing the studio that made it, Mushi Productions, to go bankrupt due to poor box office performance, The Belladonna of Sadness has become a cult classic in the years since its release. It takes an unfortunate horror staple, the rape-revenge film, and places it into an animated world full of psychedelic imagery.
Whilst not ‘scary’ in the sense that it contains jumpscares and gore, its’ haunting visual style and deeply tragic story make it utterly horrific. Featuring witchcraft and the devil himself, this is a very unique film that deserves a watch for its’ animation alone, but is not for everyone.
