Kill it and Leave This Town displays some of the most unique and bleak art seen in all animation. Appearing like little doodles on paper, scribbly characters navigate a melancholy and oddly beautiful world that feels claustrophobic and empty all at once.

Made by Polish animator Mariusz Wilczyński in his first film as director, the film deals with themes of loss and grief in an entirely unique way. The fantastical plot follows a man who flees to a land where the memories of his deceased loved ones are alive and well, and time has not allowed them to die.

Wilczyński stated that the film was made in response to his own family passing, and anyone who has been through a similar experience immediately connects with that message. It’s a bittersweet film, carefully balancing between misery and beauty.

The psychological horror that lies beneath the surface slowly builds throughout the films’ runtime, aided by the eerie imagery, and really gets under your skin. There are some pretty icky moments of body horror, but the film leaves you with a creepy feeling and requires you to make up your own mind about it. It’s a headmelty experience, but one that is definitely worth checking out.
