10 Terrifying Animated Horror Movies
3. La Casa Lobo
This Chilean masterpiece, alternately titled The Wolf House for English-speaking audiences, is a fairy tale turned into a nightmare. It is obviously handcrafted, with human touch all over each frame, which is a testament to the work that went into the picture.
Inspired by a real life Nazi colony in Chile, what could have easily been an exploitative story of the horrors of such a group instead takes a more sophisticated approach. The horrors of the fictionalised version of the colony are left to the viewer’s imagination, and instead the horror is psychological.
Protagonist Maria is trapped in a house that constantly warps and twists to reflect her trauma with two pigs that slowly turn into human children. It is hard to pick out this story however, as much of the film is from Maria’s own point of view, and her weakening grip on reality makes her a narrator so unreliable that Edward Norton in Fight Club appears remarkably stable by comparison.
Maria’s descent into madness is fed by the house itself, which should be elevated to the same legendary haunted house halls as The Amity House and Bates Motel, and the viewer feels just as trapped in its hungry walls as she does.
