10 Terrifying Basement Scenes In Horror Movies

2. The Conjuring

Evil Dead Remake
Warner Bros.

The Conjuring is the first movie made in what some people call the Conjureverse (The Conjuring Universe), a surprisingly successful universe of interconnected horror films based loosely on the exploits of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.

The first Conjuring movie took the couple to a farmhouse in Rhode Island, which had been taken over by the spirit of a witch called Bathsheba Sherman.

However, the scariest scene of the film happens before the paranormal couple was called in to help. This scene involves the mother of the family who moved into the farmhouse playing a cute game of hide and seek with clapping as the only way to find each other.

Bathsheba decides to get involved in the family's game, drawing the mother into the basement with claps and slamming the door in her face. When the mother recovers, a toy ball is thrown from seemingly nowhere and the lightbulb bursts, leaving the mom alone in the dark.

Then, to top it all off, when the mom tries to use matches to relight the room, a pair of hands appear from behind her and clap, putting out the matches and completely trapping the poor mom inside her basement with no way out.
