10 Terrifying Halloween-Set Horror Movies
1. Hell House LLC
Much like The Houses October Built, Hell House LLC uses a found footage format to sell the gimmick of real scares in a fake haunted house attraction. However, it succeeds in a number of areas where its predecessor failed.
First, while The Houses October Built tries early on to bridge a link to real life by discussing potentially real issues plaguing the haunted house industry, Hell House LLC does the same without abruptly dropping the theme as soon as its presented. The idea that Hell House would endanger its actors and potentially even its patrons by putting them in real danger is a fairly important plot point, as the titular company might go out of business without attracting attention through extreme scares.
Second, while the characters are only marginally more likable this time around, they're not so obnoxious that you actually want to see them die. It's absurd how many horror films get this wrong.
Most importantly, however, Hell House LLC recognizes the terror of uncertainty. Creepy hidden details and changing background imagery not only provide incentive for multiple viewings, but accurately evoke a brand of subliminal suspense typically only experienced in the corners of our eyes. This feeling may linger long after viewing, and you'll wonder as you embark on your own Halloween adventures if you can ever really trust what you think you see.
