10 Terrifying Halloween-Set Horror Movies

8. The Scarehouse

The Scarehouse may not warrant the same cult status as other Canadian horror classics such as Ginger Snaps, but it does provoke some fear on the basis of its premise alone. This blend of black comedy, revenge horror and torture porn not only delivers some fairly unique deaths, but also a thought-provoking look at sorority hazing gone wrong.

Kimberly-Sue Murray, the voice of Gamora in Marvel's new Guardians of the Galaxy game, utterly steals the show as one of two young women seeking revenge after a fatal Halloween prank. While her characterization is wildly uneven, the film's best moments derive terror by exploring the generally unreliable nature of trust. Perhaps the motivation for the film's murder plot feels largely unconvincing, but the betrayal of close friends feels entirely too real.

As for more traditional scares, The Scarehouse is admittedly somewhat light. However, some of the torture scenes involve such unnervingly practical methods of abuse that you're almost sure to wriggle in your seat with phantom pains.

The best scare, however, effects discomfort by merely replacing blood with a clear mystery fluid that even the antagonists can't identify. With so many horror fans typically numb to blood and gore, it's amazing that more horror films haven't taken this approach.
