Fans of the 1988 original may not be over the moon for 2009's Night of the Demons remake, but it deserves some credit for maintaining both the camp and horror of the original while effectively translating it for modern audiences. While Shannon Elizabeth's performance and Linnea Quigley's source-accurate cameo occupy one end of the spectrum, the remake's perversely discomforting update on the original's bizarre lipstick scene lands squarely in the other.

In fact, pretty much all of the film's raunchier content feels effectively unnerving. An early demonic sex scene is so confusingly presented that it actually becomes physically uncomfortable to watch, and those expecting a sexed-up 80s throwback may get something a little darker than they'd bargained for.

Admittedly, most of the real scares occur early on. But if you're the type that likes to follow your fright fests with a non-cerebral palette cleanser, this film will give you both. The film's first true scare jolts you out of nowhere, but toward the end you'll be laughing at some choice dialogue before rocking out to some Evil Dead-inspired action. And the whole way through, Monica Keener's show-stealing performance will distract you from the rather tone deaf casting of Edward Furlong as a shady drug dealer.
