10 Terrifying Halloween-Set Horror Movies

4. The Houses October Built

The central gimmick of The Houses October Built frankly doesn't feel like it should work. As the film crew walks through real Texas scare attractions, we're meant to fear that some of the scares we see might actually be real. The first of these sequences is so poorly shot and edited that it sets tremendously low expectations for the rest of the film, feeling essentially like someone uploaded some bad phone-recorded footage onto YouTube.

Almost immediately afterward, however, a few major plot points and some much-needed improvements in the cinematography department switch things into gear. Once we're given our first few glimpses of the Blue Skeleton crew, every haunted maze walkthrough keeps us on the edge of our seat as we try to determine what's meant to be part of the attraction and what's not.

If the film didn't hinge so much on obnoxious characters making consistently dumb choices, The Houses October Built actually might've earned a top spot on the list. Unfortunately, the cast so frequently disregards the physical and mental safety of their sole female companion that the tension dissolves as you find yourself rooting for these idiots to die. If you've seen V/H/S, you should know the feeling well.
