9. Fear Of Isolation - Alien (1979)
Ridley Scotts sci-fi horror classic is a masterclass in terror. Sure, the mere sight of H. R. Gigers creature, dripping with goodness-only-knows-what, is utterly petrifying on its own and the overtly, viciously sexual nature of its attacks on the male crew members of the Nostromo have certainly contributed to the squirms of many an audience member. But, the true nerve-shredding horror of the film is highlighted by the films iconic tagline: "In space no-one can hear you scream." The concept of being so alone, so very far from home, with no one and nothing coming to your aid is one that could chill anyone to the bone. That sweeping opening shot of the interstellar expanse the crew is floating in keeps dancing in your mind throughout, reminding you just how far away from help the hapless group are. As Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) sees her crewmates picked off one-by-one, until she finds herself all alone in all that nothingness with the alien, is it any wonder she clings so tightly to Jones the cat?
