10 Terrifying Horror Films That Exploit Your Everyday Fears

8. Fear Of Being Unable To Control Yourself - Oculus (2014)

At first glance, Oculus appears to be yet another tired horror film about a haunted item wreaking havoc on a nice, middle-class American family. But when the two children (Karen Gillan, Brenton Thwaites) of a broken family grow up and get their hands on the mirror from their childhood home, this movie quickly begins to divert from the formula and finds a horrifying niche. No ghosts or ghouls come sweeping out of this mirror to grab you; this mirror simply (and terrifyingly) induces hallucinations in those who look into it. Any harm that comes to those unlucky enough to share a room with this particular looking glass doesn€™t come at the hands of a supernatural beastie: they bring it on themselves. Most of us have heard that little voice telling us to jump when looking down from a great height €“ Oculus imagines a scenario in that voice becomes louder or, worse, convinces you that jumping is the best option you€™ve got. Or, perhaps, that a lightbulb could make a tasty snack€
