2. Asami - Audition

A modern horror great, Audition's Asami is one of the most unhinged villains in the genre. A seemingly innocent, reserved young woman, her true, sadistic colours are slowly shown over the course of Takashi Miike's opus.

This is a classic slow burn horror, and a lot of the dread comes from the build up to an explosive finale. It's also supposed to keep you guessing, guessing as to what Asami is actually capable of and how twisted her mind is. As a result, it either leaves plot beats open to interpretation, or cuts away before you can get a handle on what's going on.

Asami doesn't need to kill you to make you feel powerless though, and that's what makes her so nightmarish. In fact, sometimes she proves there are fates worse than death, for instance being kept in a bag, having bits of you chopped off and being forced to eat sick out of a dog bowl.

I think I'd take a swift death from anyone else on this list than that, honestly.
