10 Terrifying Horror Movie Villains Hiding In Plain Sight

1. Pipes - Ghostwatch

Hereditary Monster
BBC

Released as a fictional documentary for a BBC halloween special, Ghostwatch has been committed to British film history for accidentally causing mass hysteria. Presented by real-life BBC stars playing themselves, the group conduct a paranormal investigation on a house in London, uncovering a malicious poltergeist by the name of Pipes that draws power through the "live" filming and starts to haunt watchers in their own homes.

The film was designed with subtle apparitions of Pipes throughout in what appears to be an attempt to incite call ins to the studio, with those that have seen Pipes getting in touch and matching his appearance to the established descriptions. The presenters don't notice Pipes on their traversal of the house, making his sneaky, looming appearances all the more frightening - especially when the whole show begins with the presenters not taking it seriously and it appearing as campy farce.

The legend of Ghostwatch has persisted so strongly in British culture that it's never been rerun on UK television since. Considering the sheer amount of people blown into a panic by the premise originally, that's probably fair enough.
