2. Cultists - Hereditary
As well as featuring one of the most shocking deaths ever put to screen, Hereditary ramps up the creep factor in a whole load of other tricksy ways too. One of the most effective is incredibly easy to miss on first viewing, since we're distracted by a tightly woven plot and unsure what we're looking for, but watch through again and some outside interference is terrifyingly blatant to see.
The Graham family's struggle with supernatural happenings feels alarmingly out of their control, and it's only when a cult is discovered to be pulling the strings that it all begins to make sense. Throughout the film, however, the cult members aren't shy about making their butt naked presence known pretty clearly - appearing in various shots that establish their control.
Outside in a wide shot of the house, in the attic, behind ajar doorways - they crop up all over, sometimes even conjuring a glimmer of the spiritual Paimon (as seen in the gif below) to mess with the Grahams instead. It's a film of tiny details (both literally and figuratively considering the miniature dioramas), and reveals more with each and every horrifying rewatch you can bear to sit through.
