10 Terrifying Horror Movie Villains Hiding In Plain Sight

Mike Flanagan's early work was just a taster of what the man would go on to produce, with Before I Wake an effort that established the horror maestro as more than capable when it comes to the weird and wonderful. The story tells us of young boy Cody, who has a special gift in that his dreams become reality as he sleeps. Unfortunately, that comes with the caveat that his nightmares do too.

In one of the early scenes showcasing Cody's power, he manifests a swarm of butterflies whilst asleep in bed that flock to his foster parents downstairs. As Jessie allows them to land on her, a dark, black moth lands on and bites her - quickly brushed aside from the marvel at seeing the rest of the beautiful insects.

Whilst we're all enamoured with these lovely creatures though, the moth lands behind Jessie and quickly spreads into an imposing, dark stain that shifts and cracks - continually growing until the door is slammed that wakes Cody up upstairs.

Subtle, but makes its point that something dark is lurking underneath all the beautiful butterfly antics. And that something dark is the Canker Man.
