10 Terrifying Horror Movie Villains Hiding In Plain Sight

7. Mr. Bye Bye - The Bye Bye Man

Hereditary Monster
STX Entertainment

The Bye Bye Man is not good by any stretch of the imagination. Whilst the premise could have been promising if it was handled differently, what we ended up with was a cliche mess - but that doesn't mean we can't separate what glimmers of goodness it presented otherwise. The Bye Bye Man is just Doug Jones doing his creepy best in a sith cloak, unfortunately, meaning his presence isn't exactly intimidating, but it's when he's snuck into scenes without any fanfare that he really manages to shine.

One such early moment sees young girl Alice wander through her uncle's newly rented house. She enters the bedroom with the camera tracking behind her, and a mirror on the left hand wall. As the camera passes the mirror, it reflects further into the room - showing Mr. Bye Bye Man himself hiding within at the very last moment.

As the oblivious Alice then carries on with her exploration, she opens a cubby door, with the now wide shot showing the door on the other side of the room open and a wolf's head appear in tandem. It's a neat little one-two of tricks that shows the influence of this supernatural entity before he makes his presence truly felt - though judging by the reception to the movie, maybe he should have just carried on in secret instead.
