Directed by a triumvirate of horror helmers including Society’s Brian Yuzna and Silent Hill adapter Christophe Gans, Necronomicon is a 1993 anthology horror movie split into three stories, each of which takes on the considerable task of realizing a different Lovecraft story onscreen—though not before the directors take their own liberties with the stories.

As a result, the eventual flick is a dizzying array of diverging horror storytelling styles, each doing justice to the writer’s cold, dark tales—though the clear standout has to be Death Note director Shusuke Kaneko’s appropriately chilling The Cold, an adaptation of Cool Air which will leave even the most hardened horror fiends shook by the time it reaches its enigmatic close.
