One of the more obscure productions on this list (maybe less so, now that Netflix has made its director a genre superstar), Gerald’s Game helmer Mike Flanagan’s 2011 indie hit Absentia is one of those rare treats for genre fans—a hybrid of psychological and supernatural horror which melds grotesque shocks with a tense and unsettling atmosphere that leaves the audience wondering just how much of what they’re seeing is even real.

As our heroine’s husband reappears after a seven year absence, she’s plunged into a terrifying ordeal of nightmarish visions and a shadowy, unseen threat whose very existence is never confirmed, even by the film’s ambiguous, Lovecraft-aping closing frames.
