10 Terrifying Horror Movies Set In A Prison

1. Last Shift (2014)

In the 2010s, many a throwaway horror flick arrived to make bank despite rotten reviews from critics. In amongst these releases, Last Shift obtained a surprisingly solid critical reception. It was released at FrightFest 2014 and was directed by Anthony DiBlasi.

When rookie police officer Jessica Loren is assigned the night shift at a local jail, she finds herself contending with evil spirits and other demonic events. It's the last operation before the police station closes and Loren is all alone against the supernatural terrors. Outside of some moderate intervention from her superiors, there's no escape from this night shift from hell.

The film maintains its sharp edge by alternating between unpredictable events and its twisting of reality. By keeping us in the setting with Jessica, we feel the same fear and claustrophobia she does. The narrow corridors of the station make for a brilliant backdrop.

Last Shift ended up blending in with many other standard horror releases at the time. Where films like The Devil Inside and Annabelle crawled their way to box office success, this 2014 release went by mostly unnoticed. Still, its prison setting did successfully create a sense of isolation and as a result, it stands as incredibly underrated.
