10 Terrifying Horror Movies Set In A Prison

2. A Cure For Wellness (2016)

Last Shift
20th Century Fox

The formula of an investigation gone wrong is common in thriller media; a detective or other character ventures to an isolated institution in a bid to unravel its mysteries, only to find themselves consumed by what they look to stop. Both physically and psychologically, a breakdown ensues over the course of the runtime.

Directed by Gore Verbinski of Pirates of the Caribbean fame, A Cure for Wellness follows Lockhart (played by Dane DeHaan) as he investigates the disappearance of his colleague at a mysterious "wellness centre" in the Swiss Alps. Instead he finds an asylum with many horrific deeds designed to keep its residents trapped forever.

Nasty restraints and the hideous use of medical experiments make the film a very uncomfortable watch at several points. As Lockhart delves deeper into the asylum, the more agonising the suffering becomes. It seeps into the mind, breaking the will of many a prisoner. Many of the residents are beyond saving, having become completely enslaved to the monsters running the place.

While it's plagued by serious pacing and editing problems, A Cure for Wellness is still able to generate some sinister vibes. The prison masquerading as a wellness centre is certainly its biggest highlight, hiding many sinister secrets behind its seemingly honourable goals.
