10 Terrifying Horror Movies Set In A Prison
7. Alien 3 (1992)
Our next entry is a controversial third entry. Franchises can struggle to avoid the curse of the third entry. They either run out of ideas or go in a direction that doesn't fit with its superior predecessors. Alien 3 is one example; after two of the best science fiction films ever made, this entry fell flat with critics and audiences.
Yet its setting and tone still fit in well with the series. Alien 3 takes place on the prison planet Fury 161. When Ellen Ripley crash lands into an environment filled with rapists and murderers, the humans are forced to work together to tackle the hideous Xenomorph with no weapons to hand.
Known for its relentlessly bleak and depressing tone, Alien 3 goes beyond the brutality of prison and offers a more philosophical feel that wasn't seen in the franchise before. Some of the leading cast members do a great job with their performances, most notably Charles Dance as the prison doctor Clements.
In spite of Alien 3's awful production cycle, some fans do hold it in high regard. This is especially true of the assembly cut, which restores lost scenes and adds a great amount of depth to the production. It's not as scary as Alien or Aliens, but it's certainly a compelling prison drama at points.
