10 Terrifying Horror Movies Set In A Prison
6. Haunting Of Cell Block 11 (2014)
Another ghostly entry to make the list, 2014's Haunting of Cell Block 11, also known as Apparitional, was another small scale effort involving creepy apparitions. Filmmaker Andrew P. Jones both wrote and directed it, with the production premiering in Jefferson City.
The film follows a ghost hunting crew who are pushing themselves to improve TV ratings before their show, "Ghost Sightings" is cancelled. Tipped off by a unique source, they head to an abandoned institution and quickly find themselves trapped in a horrific struggle for survival.
Many hideous crimes were committed in this prison and the spectres now look to punish anyone who wanders into their midst. The film crew is forced to use their wits and surprisingly effective technology to combat the threats. The apparitions pierce the characters psychologically, commanding their thoughts and actions, making for a less overt method of scares.
Once again, there's little indication of how well it fared with critics and the box office upon its release. Being small scale and mostly overshadowed by other larger releases, Haunting of Cell Block 11's brand of horror had a tricky time reaching a wider audience. Thanks to its grisly undertones, the film is still able to make an impact on watching.
