10 Terrifying Horror Movies Set In A Prison
4. Beyond Re-Animator (2003)
Another franchise to make the list, the Re-Animator series built its name in the eighties on grotesque gore and ludicrous experiments involving bringing the dead back to life. After the 1985 original and its follow-up, Bride of Re-Animator in 1990, many believed the franchise had ended after two entries.
That seemed to be the case until the new millennium. Arriving very belatedly in 2003, Beyond Re-Animator was one last attempt to entertain its niche audience. Some thirteen years after he was put in prison, the nefarious Dr. Herbert West finds a new opportunity to poke into human anatomy.
Using supplies at his place of incarceration, West uncovers a new means of resurrection in the form of nano-plasmic energy. On cue, the doctor's work leads to chaos at the prison with a full-on riot serving as the film's climax. It's perhaps the bloodiest film on the list with its gory effects and brutal setting.
Beyond Re-Animator was struck down by its late release. Nearly two decades on from the golden age of eighties horror, it simply couldn't fit in with the newer releases and trends of the 2000s. The film's theatrical run was very limited in the US and ended up being severely trimmed to a PG rating for its TV release.
