Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Soderberg and starring The Crown’s award-winning Claire Foy, Unsane is a low budget chiller that left a huge impression on audiences when it hit our screens in 2018.

The thriller centres round Sawyer (Foy), a woman who has been severely affected by a stalker (Joshua Leonard). Seeking psychiatric help, she heads to Highland Creek Behavioural Centre. Whilst there, however, she’s tricked into signing a form which commits her as a patient into the facility. But no matter what she says or does to protest her sanity, the staff write her behaviour off as another sign of her mental instability.

Even worse: Sawyer believes that her stalker has followed her to the centre and is posing as an orderly to get close to her.

As events escalate, the plot delves further into pulpy genre tropes. But no matter how odd evens get, Foy’s unwaveringly solid performance ensures that every moment continues to be taken seriously. The stellar supporting cast likewise contribute to the hard-hitting impact of the proceedings.

Moreover, the flick sustains a palpable sense of paranoia throughout thanks to its tight, claustrophobic cinematography that Soderberg achieved through shooting on an iPhone 7 Plus.
