“Asylum” is technically the wrong word to use when describing the sinister spa featured in Gore Verbinski’s A Cure For Wellness. But what happens here is just as devious as any other horrifying horror hospital.

Located at the summit of a picturesque mountain in the Swiss Alps, this sanatorium is touted as a premium retreat for the wealthy. However, there’s something sinister in the water, and this is a shocking discovery that ambitious Wall Street executive Lockhart (Dane DeHaan) uncovers for himself when he’s sent to the spa to bring back his company’s CEO, who’s yet to return from his vacation. But after breaking his leg in a car crash, Lockhart finds himself checking-in instead.

Despite the sanatorium's immaculate appearance, there’s something not quite right about the place that goes beyond the strange behaviour of the staff. The building likewise has a horrific history, and as Lockhart pieces together what’s really going on he learns that the reality is far grimmer than he could’ve ever imagined.

the serene white hallways filled with sunshine give way to cold corridors and damp dungeons when the façade is lifted. But it’s the water that visitors should beware most of all.
