Fred Walton's black comedy opens with Kit Graham and her college friends arriving at an isolated mansion to celebrate spring break. As is custom, the host, Muffie, prepares a myriad of pranks to keep everyone entertained.

But after the group find drug utensils in their bedroom and begins to hear screaming babies, Kit realises the weekend away is no laughing matter. And when Muffy starts killing her guests, Kit does everything she can to escape.

During the climax, Kit evades Muffy by dashing into the living room, where she sees the so-called victims are alive and well. In that moment, Kit realises the whole massacre was an elaborate April Fool's gag at her expense.

So, there you have it. There was no real threat and nobody got hurt.

Having said that, it looked like things were going to take a dark turn during the epilogue. In the last few moments, Muffy is opening a present when her throat is slit open by her friend, Nan.

Or so it seems. When Muffy realises she's unharmed, Nan reveals she used a trick razor and fake blood to fool her.

This light-hearted twist was effective, since it didn't just fool the primary prankster, but the audience as well.
