Thanks to Guillermo del Toro, Charlie Brooker and numerous others, anthology horror has not only had a resurgence over the last decade-and-a-half, but has been sustained through thick and thin. While once-niche films like V/H/S (2012), The ABCs of Death (2012) and their sequels are now old hat in the horror fandom, there are still a few similar flicks that have slipped by under the radar.

One such slippery feature is The Field Guide to Evil, a two-hour exploration of stories and folk tales from around the globe, with a typically mixed bag of directors at the helm (including indie darling Peter Strickland), wielding a tenth of the budget they deserve. The film features child-snatching djinn, melon-headed children, wine-blooded goblins, and a strangely persistent concern with pastoral animals...

While the quality of the segments varies wildly, there are a few stories and visuals that run their talons down the back of your neck and dare you to turn off the lights. The Field Guide is never going to be The ABCs, but exploring the dark folk roots of many of the horror elements we're familiar with is a fun and frightening way to spend the evening, with some authentic scares to boot.
